Yahara River Habitat and Streambank Restoration Project 7.10.26

July 10, 2026

Year 3 Construction is Underway Along the Yahara River

If you've walked or biked the Yahara River Trail recently, you've likely noticed construction equipment, trail activity, and work taking place along the riverbanks. While the project may look a little rough during construction, these improvements are an important step toward restoring the long-term health of the Yahara River and enhancing recreational opportunities for the community.

What's Happening?

Streambank Restoration

  • Contractors are restoring eroding streambanks by installing root wads — large tree root systems that help stabilize the banks, reduce erosion, and create valuable habitat for trout and other aquatic species.

Floodplain Reconnection

  • Crews are reshaping portions of the riverbank and adjacent floodplain to reconnect the river with its natural floodplain. During high-water events, this allows water to spread out naturally rather than becoming confined to the channel, helping reduce erosion while improving the river's overall function.

Rock J-Hooks Installed

  • Rock J-hooks have now been installed throughout the project area. These in-stream structures help direct water flow away from vulnerable banks, reduce erosion, and create deeper pools and improved habitat for fish and other aquatic life.

New River Access Points

  • New canoe and kayak launches have been installed at Veterans Memorial Park, Western Green, and Bluestem to provide safer and more convenient public access to the Yahara River for paddlers.

Habitat Restoration Continues

  • Quercus Land Stewardship Services continues ecological restoration efforts throughout the project area, including prescribed burns, invasive species management, and native prairie and woodland plantings that will improve habitat for wildlife and pollinators.

Thank You for Your Patience

We know the additional construction activity, equipment, and temporary disruptions along the trail aren't always ideal. However, these improvements will provide lasting benefits by restoring river health, reducing erosion, improving wildlife habitat, enhancing water quality, and creating better recreational access for residents and visitors alike.

Thank you for your patience and support as this exciting project continues to take shape.

Be sure to check back for future project updates as construction progresses.
