Bat Houses Donated by Local Eagle Scout

19 May 2025

As part of DeForest’s commitment to supporting local wildlife and encouraging community-led conservation efforts, we are excited to share a recent addition to the Birding and Bird Conservation project: bat houses built, installed and donated by a local Eagle Scout Teddy Loeffelholz.

These thoughtfully crafted bat houses offer safe, elevated roosting spaces for native bat species. Bats play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem by naturally controlling insect populations and helping with pollination.

This generous donation aligns with our broader environmental goals and showcases the positive impact of youth leadership and service in our community.

Why Bats Matter:

  • A single bat can eat thousands of mosquitoes and other insects in just one night.
  • Bats support biodiversity and balance in natural areas.
  • Providing bat houses helps offset habitat loss and encourages cohabitation with wildlife.

Where to Spot Them:
The bat houses have been installed in select Village parks and natural areas (Upper Yahara River Trail, Bakke Conservancy, Sunnybrook Park and M&M Natural Area) where they can provide the greatest benefit to both bats and residents.

Thank You to Our Scout:
We extend a sincere thank you to Teddy Loeffelholz for your dedication to environmental stewardship and your lasting contribution to DeForest’s outdoor spaces.
